Open Source Energy Modelling System

OSeMOSYS is an open-source energy modelling system for long-run integrated assessment and planning. Each Starter Data Kit covers 12 parameters across 199 technologies and 30 useful energy demands, supporting whole-system modelling at country level for the period 2023–2050.

Each SDK contains a total of 12 parameters, described below. Likewise, each SDK includes 199 technologies and 30 useful energy demands distributed across the different sectors. The design of these SDKs supports modelling of whole energy systems at country level, enabling comprehensive sector-coupling analyses. Users may choose to use the complete dataset or only selected components, depending on their specific needs.

Historical and projected useful energy demand 2023–2050.
Capacity factor
Ratio of energy produced by a generating unit to the energy it could have produced at continuous full operation. Applicable to renewable power technologies only.
Availability factor
Planned and forced outage percentage.
Operational life
Technical lifespan.
Installed capacity
Historical installed capacity per technology.
Efficiency
Ratio between output energy and input energy.
Capital cost
Overnight costs from 2023 to 2050. Projected data was considered when available, otherwise constant values were assumed.
Fixed cost
Fixed operational and maintenance costs. Projected data was considered when available, otherwise constant values were assumed.
Variable cost
Fuel costs for primary energy supply and import technologies; variable non-fuel costs for all other technologies.
Emission factor
Dioxide carbon emission factors per fuel.
Fossil fuel reserves
Crude oil, natural gas, coal, and uranium reserves.
Renewable energy potential
Estimated maximum potential for power generation from renewable sources.
